Over in Forest Row, our team recently wrapped up an extensive repair job that covered just about every weak point along one roofline – a re-bedded verge, a brand new dry ridge system, timber repairs to rotten barge boards, and a batch of broken tiles and leaking vents swapped out along the way.

What the Forest Row Job Involved
This was a repair job rather than a full re-roof – the brief was to put right everything that had started to fail along the ridge and gables before it turned into a bigger problem. Here’s what that meant in practice.
Re-Bedding the Verge
The verge along the gable edge had come loose in places, with the old mortar bedding cracking and falling away. We re-bedded it properly, sealing the join between the roof tiles and the gable wall so rain can’t get in underneath.
Installing a New Dry Ridge System
Rather than re-bedding the ridge tiles in mortar again, which cracks and needs repointing every few years, we fitted a mechanically fixed dry ridge system along the full length of the roof.
Why It’s Worth Doing:
- No More Repointing: Dry ridge tiles are mechanically fixed rather than mortared, so there’s no bedding to crack and fall out over time.
- Better Ventilation: Most dry ridge systems include built-in ventilation, helping prevent condensation in the roof space.
Repairing the Rotten Barge Boards
Years of exposure had left the barge boards soft and rotten in places, with the paint flaking off to reveal bare, water-damaged timber underneath. We cut out the rotten sections and spliced in new timber, matched and fixed ready for decorating prep work and painting.

Replacing Broken Tiles & Leaking Vents
While we were up there, we also replaced a number of broken roof tiles and swapped out a few old tile vents that had started leaking. Small jobs like these are easy to miss from the ground, but left alone they’re exactly the kind of thing that lets water into the roof space.

A re-bedded verge, a dry ridge system, sound barge boards and no more leaking vents – small jobs added up, but together they protect the whole roof.
